Obituary of Mary-J. Moore


Mary Jo Stephens Moore, age 91, of Mitchell-Hollingsworth Regional Nursing Center, Florence, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, after a brief illness. A memorial service was at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Florence, led by Dr. Larry Baskin. Visitation was at the church immediately after the service.Mrs. Moore lived most of her life in Albertville, Ala. There will be a service for her Saturday, Dec. 27, at First Baptist Church of Albertville, with visitation at 1 p.m. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Charles Woods and the Rev. Mike Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Memory Hill Cemetery, Albertville. Akins Funeral Home, Russellville, is in charge of local arrangements, and Adams Brown Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements in Albertville.Mrs. Moore was born in Keener, Ala., on Oct. 21, 1912, to Warren Clayton and Jodie Harbour Stephens. She grew up in the Duck Springs community in Etowah County. She graduated from Alabama College (now University of Montevallo) and received her master's degree in home economics from Auburn University.An educator for 43 years, Mrs. Moore was teaching at Emma Sansom High School when she met H.E. Trent Moore, of Gadsden. They were married March 23, 1941. Trent and Mary Jo moved to Albertville in 1943, and there they raised their family. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Albertville. She also was a member of several civic organizations: United Daughters of the Confederacy, Wednesday Study Club and Alabama Retired Teachers Association.She was well known for her creative and artistic talents. These were demonstrated by numerous bulletin boards and displays at both Albertville High School and First Baptist Church. An accomplished seamstress, she also shared many original creations with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Trent; and her granddaughter, Kathryn Jane; brothers, Dr. Seldon H. Stephens and Dr. W.C. Stephens; and sister, Ella Lee Stephens.Survivors include son, Steve T. Moore and his wife, Alice, Glencoe; daughters, Mary Lee Moore and Laine Moore Williamson, Silver City, N.C.; and son, Dr. W. Hampton Moore and his wife, Melinda, Florence; grandchildren, John Trent Moore, Columbia, Tenn., Nathan Flippo, Mary Claire Moore, Dean Hampton Moore and Clayton Daniel Moore, of Florence.Pallbearers will be Ira Jo Crawford, Mickey Hall, Warren C. Weaver, Richard Ferguson, Dr. Mark Davis and John Chastain.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church, Albertville, Mitchell-Hollingsworth Regional Nursing Center for patient care, or the charity of your choice.The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Station 2 at Mitchell-Hollingsworth and Rita VanDyke and the staff at Green Oaks Inn for the compassionate and loving way in which they have cared for our Mother through the years.
