Obituary of Mary-Irene-Tankard Harris


Mary Irene Tankard Harris, died May 7, 2001. She was born in Yeatesville, N.C., Sept. 19, 1908. Mrs. Harris the daughter of the late Mary Irene and John Macon Tankard. She was the widow of Henry Russell Harris Jr. of Seaboard. She attended grammar school and high school at Washington Collegiate Institute, graduating in 1924. In 1928, she graduated from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. A lifetime member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Mrs. Harris was very active in church and civic affairs. Most importantly, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Harris is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Clairene Harris Aiken and Hugh Kerr Aiken Jr. of Greenville, and Jane Harris Grant and Eugene Bowers Grant Jr. of Weldon, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jane Aiken Hagerty of St. Louis, Mo., Susan Aiken Morris of Columbia, Mary Elizabeth Aiken of Greenville, Eugene Bowers Grant III of Flemington, N.J., and Russell Harris Grant of Weldon, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren, John Withers Morris, Hugh Aiken Morris, Macon Carlisle Morris of Columbia, Mary Lanier Hagerty, Robert Chapman Hagerty and Claire Aiken Hagerty of St. Louis, Mo., Jacob Cameron Grant of Flemington, N.J.; two sisters, Ruth Tankard Jones and Sarah Katherine Tankard of Belhaven, N.C.; and one brother, John Alderson Tankard, of Bath, N.C.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Harris of Seaboard, N.C. She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Tankard Nixon; and a brother, Ralph Leslie Tankard. The family will receive friends at the home at 201 Church St., Seaboard, N.C. Graveside services will be held today, May 9, 2001, at the Seaboard Cemetery, with the Rev. Bert Kirk and the Rev. Robert Alves officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice. - Askew Funeral Services, 731 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, is handling the arrangements.
