Mary Hughes, born in 1925, spouse of Lancelot-Durrell Hughes, daughter of John-Nevin and Betty-Miller, mother of Dana, died on April 21, 2012 at 86 years old.
Mary Watts Hughes, 86, passed away peacefully in her home in Miramar Beach, Fla., on Saturday, April 21, 2012, after a lengthy illness. Mary was born Nov. 29, 1925, to John Nevin Watts and Betty Miller Watts in St. Albans, W.Va. She worked as an Executive Secretary at Capital and United Airlines. It was in church in Miami Springs, Fla., that she met her beloved husband, Lancelot Durrell Hughes, who was a pilot/flight engineer for Pan Am. During their marriage they traveled the world together, London being one of Mary's favorite places. They continued to travel extensively, including numerous cruises, after their retirement. They were married for 43 years until his death in January 2011Mary was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church in Miami and in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. She was a dedicated, selfless volunteer on numerous church committees and functions. She also volunteered in the community at Sacred Heart Hospital and Caring and Sharing of South Walton County. She and Lance were charter members of Christ the King Episcopal Church from its conception - first at Fisher's of Men Retreat Center, and then in the double-wide trailer on Highway 98 where early services were held. Mary loved reading and you never saw her without a book in hand until the technology of the Kindle and I Pad. Mary was self taught on all the latest technology from Apple and she was the one person that people would call for assistance.Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Betty Watts; her loving husband, Lancelot; her sisters, Mildred W. Dunlap, Helen W. Sovine and Dorothy W. Casto; and brothers, James W. Watts and Michael M. Watts.Mary is survived by her two stepsons, Lancelot Hughes Jr. and wife, Mary Susan Modzel, and Paul Hughes and wife, Janet; one stepdaughter, Vikktoria Reres; seven step-grand children, Dana Hughes and fiancé, Rikki Garrett, Erin Hunter and husband, Greg, Michael Hughes and wife Annie, Inger Reres, J.D. Reres, Torry Reres and Lance Reres; one step-great-grandson, Garrett Bradley Hughes; and numerous nieces and nephews.A celebration memorial Eucharist service will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Episcopal Church, 480 N. County Highway 393, Santa Rosa Beach, with interment following at the church columbarium. A reception and family visitation will follow the interment.
