Mrs. Mary Ginny Sherrod Hicks - STATESBORO - Mrs. Mary Ginny Sherrod Hicks, age 84, died Wednesday March 11, 2015 at Senior Care Center of Brunswick, under the care of Golden Isles Hospice. The native of Swainsboro, Georgia was a graduate of Commercial High School in Savannah. Ginny married Virgil Hicks in 1951 and they traveled the world with his military career. In 1971, Virgil retired and he and Ginny made their home in Statesboro. She began working at Georgia Southern College in 1971 in the University Comptroller Division in which she retired in 1990. Ginny was a very active and dedicated member of the First Baptist Church in Statesboro where she was a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class and the Celebration Choir. Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by her husband Virgil in 2013 and by their son Brian Hicks in 2007. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Susan Hicks of Brunswick; her granddaughters and husbands, Michelle and Baron Smith of Brunswick and Megan and William Young of Charleston, SC; a sister, Betty Malott of Savannah and a sister-in-law, Joy Sherrod of Statesboro. The family will receive visitors on Friday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00am in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. John Waters officiating, assisted by Dr. H. William Perry. Graveside services and burial will be Saturday at 2:00pm at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park in Savannah. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Lydia Sunday School Class. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Statesboro Building Fund, 108 North Main St. Statesboro, Ga. 30458.
