Williams, Mary HelenMary Helen Williams of Fairfield, Connecticut and Landgrove, Vermont died at home on Sept. 3 from metastatic breast cancer. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by her family. Mrs. Williams was born in Fairfield on July 5, 1923 to Abner Wheeler Mitchell, originally of Washington, CT, and Ella Kenyon Mitchell, originally from Binghamton, NY. She graduated from Walnut Hill School and Colby Junior College, now Colby-Sawyer College. She married Arthur Collins Williams, also of Fairfield, on June 29, 1946. For Mrs. Williams, family, especially her husband, always came first. Whenever she celebrated a milestone, she asked that it be "family only" and she created festive Christmas holidays every year, including the most recent one. She is survived by her husband, her four children, Katherine Williams Krents of Bethesda, MD, Charles Gallup Williams (Jacqueline Wygant) of Portland, OR, Arthur "Bill" Collins Williams, Jr. of Fairfield, and Douglas Kenyon Williams (Deidre Klein Williams) of Easton. She also is survived by seven grandchildren, James Eliot Krents (Lisa Ventry) of Brooklyn, NY, William Lawrence Krents (Ali DiMatteo) of Washington, DC, Michael Justin Krents of Silver Spring, MD, Laurel Wygant Williams (Carl Kloos) of Pasadena, CA, Kendra Justine Williams of Yakima, WA, Rachel Lilian Williams and Caroline Elizabeth Williams, both of Easton, and two great grandchildren, Charles Bon Krents and Nina Sophia Krents. Mrs. Williams worked as a secretary while her husband finished Yale College and Yale Law School after returning from service in World War II. After raising her children, she enjoyed a 20-year career as a residential real estate agent for Barker Walsh and Jensen Smith. She was a member of many charitable organizations, including the Junior League of Bridgeport and the Bridgeport Ladies Charitable Society, the oldest continuous charitable society in the country. Over the course of her life, she served on the Board of the Burroughs Home in Bridgeport and volunteered there for a number of years. She volunteered for many other organizations, including Bridgeport Hospital, Operation Hope and the Woodfield Home. She was the first baby baptized in the United Congregational Church in Bridgeport after it was built in 1923, where she had been a lifelong and active member and arranged for the weekly chancel flowers for over 50 years. She was a member at Brooklawn Country Club and Fairfield Beach Club in Fairfield, as well as Ekwanok Country Club in Manchester VT. An avid and competitive golfer, she and her husband enjoyed many tournaments at their various clubs with great success. They won the Husband and Wife Championship at Brooklawn twice and were runners-up three other times. She also won the Brooklawn Club Championship and made 3 holes-in-1 on other occasions. Mrs. Williams was an ardent dog lover, especially of her precious boxers Guerri, Rocky, Clyde, Bonnie and Sunnie. The family would like to express its gratitude to Nuha Musallam for her ongoing extraordinary and loving caregiving. A memorial service will be held at the United Congregational Church, 877 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, CT, at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8, with a reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Williams may be honored with contributions to the Bridgeport Ladies Charitable Society, PO Box 320132, Fairfield, CT 06824.
