MARY HELEN HOOKS, 83 Student Counselor LAKELAND - Mary Helen Hooks, 83, passed away at Good Shepherd Hospice House, Auburndale, FL, on March 19, 2007, due to heart failure. Mary was born on January 19, 1924, in Baltimore, Maryland, while her father, Dr. Arthur Burns, was a practicing physician at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Cuero, Texas, where she was raised. She graduated from the University of Texas where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After graduating from the University of Texas, she received a master's degree in Student Personnel Administration from Columbia University, New York, New York. She was employed as a student counselor at the University of West Virginia, and the Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University, prior to raising her children. After her children were grown, she returned to school and earned a nursing degree from Polk Community College in Winter Haven. Mary was past president of the Junior League of Lakeland, a member of numerous civic organizations, an avid traveler, and a faithful and active member of her beloved book club. She was a lifelong learner and student, and enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction of continuing her education throughout her life. She is survived by her three children: Hollis Hooks, Lakeland; David Hooks, Belleair, FL; and Helen Gohari, Tampa, FL. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Ryan Hooks, Smyrna, GA; Emily Hooks and Hamilton Hooks, Lakeland; a great granddaughter, Lily Hooks, Smyrna GA; and her brother, Joseph Burns, Cuero, TX. A visitation will be held at Heath Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, March 21, from 5 to 7 PM. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, at 10:00 AM at the Glenn Moore Chapel, at Florida Presbyterian Homes. Memorial contributions are requested by the family to be made to one of Mary's three wonderfully compassionate care-giving organizations: Florida Presbyterian Homes (Porter McGrath Center), 16 Lake Hunter Dr., Lakeland, FL 33803; Lakeland Regional Medical Center Foundation, 129 S.
