Mary-Hanna Barnes, born in 1923, spouse of Charles-F. Barnes, daughter of Charles and Eleanor, died on March 16, 2010. Please consult the obituary here:
BARNES, Mary HannaOf New Johnsonville and Waverly, March 16, 2010 of ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) at Horizon Medical Center, Dickson, TN. Mrs. Barnes was born February 25, 1923 in Piedmont, SC, one of seven children born to Eleanor and Charles Hanna. She attended school in Blacksburg, SC and was a student at Winthrop College (now Winthrop University), Rock Hill, SC, for three years before obtaining an RN from Duke University Medical School, Durham, NC. Mary Barnes worked as a nurse in VA hospitals in Jacksonville, FL and Denver, CO, as well as at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Greenville, SC. In the early 50's, she began work as an industrial nurse at the Savannah River Plant of Dupont in Georgia, where she met her husband, Charles F. Barnes. After their wedding in 1955, Mary and Chuck moved to Wilmington, DE, where he had been transferred to the Dupont headquarters. Later, they came to New Johnsonville, TN, when Mr. Barnes was sent to the Dupont Pigments Plant there. Mary Was an active member of Ellis Grove Presbyterian Church, Waverly, TN and volunteered as a nurse with the American Red Cross bloodmobile. In later years, she served as an ombudsman to monitor the care and facilities of two local nursing homes. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles Barnes; her parents, Eleanor and Charles Hanna; two brothers, Henry and Charles Hanna; a sister, Sarah Craig Myrick and a great nephew, Norbert Vaughn. She is survived by two brothers, William J. Hanna of Virginia Beach, VA and Thomas R. Hanna of Easley, SC and one sister, Eleanor McLean of Washington, DC. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, James S. Myrick, Jr. and his wife, Mary McCuen Myrick; nieces and nephews, Phil Hanna of Liberty SC, Ken and Janice Myrick of Nashville, TN, Lynn Myrick and Joel Vaughn, now serving as Catholic missioners in Bolivia, Tom Myrick of Lyles, TN, Beth and Dave Geddes of Fairhope, AL, Barbara and Tim Hodges of Greeneville, TN, and six great nieces and a great nephew. Mrs. Barnes donated her body to Vanderbilt Medical Center for research. A Memorial service will be held at Ellis Grove Presbyterian Church, Waverly, TN at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ellis Grove Presbyterian Church or the American Red Cross.
