Mary Gardner Allen, 98, Placida, died Sept. 25, 2004. She was born July 11, 1906, in Providence, R.I. She had been a resident of the Englewood area for 11 years, moving here from Fishkill, N.Y. She had been a legal secretary for most of her working career. She was a volunteer for the Crime Victims' Unit and was active in numerous political campaigns in Bronx, N.Y. She was a member and former registrar of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Melzingah Chapter) in Beacon, N.Y. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church. Survivors include daughters Nancy Brewer of Placida, Catherine McCarthy of Beacon, N.Y., and Marybeth McHugh of Navarre; 11 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery in Cranston, R.I. Englewood Community Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Melzingah Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, 50 Van Nydeck Ave., Beacon, NY 12508; or to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
