Mary Fish-Johnson, born in 1915, spouse of John-A. Johnson, daughter of Robert-O and Mary, mother of Edward R and Gaylord S, died on August 2, 2008 at 93 years old.
POULTNEY - Mary (Jones) Fish-Johnson, 93, of Poultney, died August 2, 2008, following a long battle fought against Alzheimer's disease.Born in Poultney, Vermont, the daughter of Robert O. and Mary (Evans) Jones, Mary lived nearly all of her life in Poultney. A fluent Welsh language speaker until she entered grade school, she was a graduate of Troy Conference Academy ('33) and Green Mountain College ('35). She married her beloved husband, Gaylord L. Fish of Ira, Vermont, in August of 1936 and together they celebrated 35 years of marriage. Mary retired from Green Mountain College in 1979, a career that lasted over 30 years, 25 of those years having been as campus bookstore manager, following work as secretary to President Jesse Bogue. Mary and her husband, Gaylord, also were longtime agents of The Prudential Insurance Co. and in Mary's retirement, she was owner of "Town-N-Village Collectibles" which she operated from her South Street home.Always active within the local community and her church, she was longtime secretary to the administrative board and board of trustees of Poultney United Methodist Church where she had been a member for 80-plus years. She was baptized in Poultney Welsh Presbyterian Church. Mary also served several terms on the Poultney School Board as well as having served several terms as a justice of the peace of Poultney. She was a longtime member of Evergreen Chapter OES #63 Eastern Star, Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce, Poultney Woman's Club and Poultney Area St. David's Society.Survivors include one son, Edward R. Fish; grandsons, David, Jeffrey and Vernon (Debbie) Fish; granddaughters, Heather (Fish) Dutcher of Queensbury, N.Y., and Alison (Fish) Mowatt; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Marleta (Jones) Zidovsky-Campbell of Little River, S.C.; several nephews, two special nieces, Janice and Marilyn, the only daughters of her two sisters; several cousins; and her sister-in-law, Alba (Lincoln) Fish of Tinmouth, Vt.Mary was predeceased in 1971 by Gaylord L. Fish, her beloved husband of 35 years; in 1991 by her son, Gaylord S. Fish; in 1968 by her 2-year-old granddaughter, Laurie Ann Fish; in 1980 by her youngest sister, Thelma (Jones) Bruso; and in 1985 by her second husband, John A. Johnson. Prior to 1971, she was also predeceased by both her parents and her brother, Robert W. Jones. Three days prior to Mary's death, she was also predeceased by her 92-year-old "sister-cousin," Laura (Williams) Abt of Middletown, N.Y.There will be no calling hours.
