Obituary of Mary-Ellen Miller

->Miller, Mary EllenMary Ellen Miller, a Mahopac resident for nearly 50 years, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 14, 2012. She was born April 20, 1923 and raised in Syracuse, NY and subsequently worked as a hospital nurse. After World War II, she met her loving husband of 63+ years, Edward J. Miller. With the start of her family, she retired from nursing and dedicated the next 20 years to her family. Upon the advent of an empty nest, she enrolled and graduated from Pace University's nursing program. For the next 15 years she worked as a substitute nurse within the Mahopac school district, from where all her children are alumni. When she was 65 year old, she failed again at retirement after she answered a Readers' Digest advertisement for a part-time summer job. Over the next 10 years her position evolved to a proofreader for submitted manuscripts. She often joked she wished she knew sooner in life that someone would have paid her to read, one of her favorite hobbies. She also enjoyed cultivating her vegetable garden often resulting in her family enjoying "homemade" salads and enjoyed cultivating her flower garden by participating in various activities in the Mahopac Garden Club, from where she met many friends during decades of involvement. With her husband, she enjoyed a competitive game of bridge, especially her monthly scheduled Saturday nights at rotating friends' home. For relaxation, she would go for a brisk walk or play her piano "by ear". She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Estes, brothers Robert (Lorraine) and Charles, and sister Jean; and brother-in-law Richard (Mary Catherine) Miller. In addition to her husband Edward, she is survived by her children Martin E. Miller, Prescott, AZ; Stephen J. Miller (Mary Lynn) Atlanta, Ga.; Dr. James E. Miller (Susan) Scottsdale, AZ; Katherine M. Miller, Austin,TX; and daughter-in-law Maria Patane Miller, Floral Park, NY; her grandchildren Nicholas Gusz Miller and Andrew Gusz Miller of Los Angeles, Ca., and Dr. Kristen M. Miller and Kevin L. Miller of Floral Park, NY; and sister, Ann Goodman (John) Fayetteville, NY and brother-in-law Eugene Dwyer, Syracuse, NY. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.Visitation will be held at Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home, 692 Route 6, Mahopac from 9-10:30AM on Saturday, August 18 followed by an 11AM mass at St John the Evangelist Church. Graveside services will be performed immediately after mass at Union Valley Cemetery, Mahopac.
