Mary Ellen Smith Carter, 65, of Gadsden, passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2014. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Collier-Butler Chapel. The Rev. Richard Lewis will officiate. The family will accept friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Collier-Butler Funeral Home & Cremations Services is directing.Mary Ellen was born Nov. 10, 1948. She was in the graduating class of 1966 from Gadsden High School. Mary continued her education at Jacksonville State University, where she studied Secondary Education. She was a former social worker for the Etowah County Department of Human Resources from 1970-1999. Mary had several interests, which consisted of upholstery, wood working, sewing, crafts of all kinds, and cards. She was a computer whiz, and she enjoyed doing small engine repairs. Mary Ellen was a jack of all trades. Ms. Carter was preceded in death by her parents, J.E. and Christine Smith; and her daughter, Christa Carter. Survivors include her daughter, Lori Carter (Kevin Goodnight); and her grandsons, David Lumpkin and Trevin Goodnight.The family would like to give a special thanks to everyone with Amedisys Hospice and all of Mary's friends who have been by her side.Online condolences may be made at www.collier-butler.com.
