TUSCALOOSA Mary Ellen Barrett, age 97, a gracious southern lady, died peacefully at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009. Mary was a lifelong Mobilian, spending the last four years of her life with her devoted niece, Donna Burrage. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, the Burse Club, and the Ladies of Charity. She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Haley and Nellie Flynn Barrett; her devoted sister, Rita (Nick) Voivedich; her brothers, John Daniel Barrett and Edmund Joseph (Cornelia) Barrett. She is survived by three nieces, Donna Voivedich (Dan) Burrage of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Elinor Voivedich (John) Jones, of Mobile, Ala., and Sr. Francis Rita (Cecilia) Voivedich, C.S.J., of Augusta, Ga.; and her great-nieces and great-nephews, Kristen Jones of Annandale, VA, Rachel (Chris) Sholler, Bryan (Michelle) Jones and Scott Jones, all of Mobile, AL.The family wishes to express their thanks to Reverend Geral Holloway and Deacon Bill Remmert of St. Francis Catholic Church in Tuscaloosa, AL for their care and concern of Mary. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 from St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, Ala. 35404 or the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet, 6400 Minnesota Ave., St. Louis, Mo.
