Obituary of Mary-Elizabeth Kerrigan


KERRIGAN Mary Elizabeth (Mullins) Kerrigan, wife, mother, grandmother, nurse and friend, born on February 18, 1921, in Hatfield, Mass., died on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, surrounded by her six children and her best friend and sister, Patricia. She resided in Newington. Prior to moving to Cedar Mountain Commons, she was a resident of Hartford and West Hartford. She spent many happy years at Green Hill Beach, R.I., surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Mary was the second of six children born to Anna (Claire) and Patrick William Mullins. She was predeceased by her sister, Anne Cecile; and her brothers, William and Thomas. She is survived by her brother, Marcus; and sister, Patricia, both of Hatfield. She graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1943, and worked at St. Francis as a nursing supervisor for many years. Mary served as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps at Fort Devens from 1945-1946. In 1955 she married the late Senator Thomas J. Kerrigan Jr., who at the time was widowed and the father of two young sons, Thomas and Christopher. After raising her family, she returned to the profession she loved and began working as a school nurse in the Hartford school system. She spent many fulfilling years nursing students at Weaver High School, St. Peter's, South Catholic and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Schools. She was an active member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Thomas Seminary, the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and the Salvation Army. She is survived by her son, Thomas, of East Granby, and his children, Erin, Michael and TC; her son, Christopher and his wife, Janet, of Simsbury, and their daughters, Cheryl and Laura; her son, Shaun and his wife, Mary, of Norton, Mass., and their children, Thomas, Meghan and Kaitlyn; her daughter, Maureen of Narragansett, R.I., and her daughters, Courtney and Melanie Chellgren; her daughter, Ann-Marie Stawarky and her husband, Jim, of Newington; and her son, Brendan and his wife, Teresa, of Fairfield, and their children, Patrick, Kate, Brian and Mollie. Of all the titles she held, that of "Nanny K," brought constant and continuing pleasure. She will be missed each and every day by all of us. She gave us countless lessons in the skills of parenting, family, faith and friendship. Calling hours will be on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of St. Joseph, 140 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hoffman Heart Center Renovation Fund, c/o St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, 114 Woodland Street, Hartford, CT 06105–9985.
