Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Hughes, 90, of Falcons Landing Military Retirement Community in Potomac Falls, Va., died Oct. 18, 2012, at home with her family by her side.She was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Balmville to parents Frank W. and Marie E. Masterson.Bette graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh as well as Spencer Business School. She was a member of the American Red Cross , Enlisted Wives Club, Non-Commissioned Officers Wives Club and Officers Wives Club at various Air Force bases.Survivors include her husband of 66 years, retired Lt. Gen. James D. Hughes, whom she married on June 4, 1946, in West Point ; to daughters, Donna Fallander and her husband, Robert, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Karen Marchant and her husband, Richard, of Springfield, Va.; two sons, Michael Hughes and his wife, Cheryl, of Asheville, N.C., and Robert Hughes and his wife, Gina, of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Robert Masterson of San Jose, Calif.; and eight grandchildren, Heather Hughes, Amanda Hughes, Holly Hughes, Ashley Hughes, Bryan Marchant, Brittany Marchant, Allison Hughes and Lizzie Hughes.She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank H. Masterson.A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Oct. 24 at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh.
