Mary-Elizabeth-Hallman Phillips, born in 1921, spouse of Reverend-G. -A. Phillips, mother of Charles, Paul, North and Elizabeth, died on June 3, 2010 at 88 years old.
Mary Elizabeth Hallman Phillips, 88, of DeLand, passed away on June 3, 2010 at the Alliance Center in DeLand. She was born in Columbia, South Carolina on August 6, 1921 and moved to DeLand in 1972. Mary attended public schools in Columbia, SC and graduated from Columbia High School. She also attended the University of South Carolina and Catawba Valley Technical Institute, from which she graduated in 1967 and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She married Reverend G. A. Phillips in 1940 and together they served parishes in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Florida and previously from 1952-1957 they served as missionaries to India through the Lutheran Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Reverend George A. Phillips and sister, Zenith Wainner. She is survived by her sons: Charles Phillips of Daytona Beach and Paul Phillips of Raleigh, North Carolina; daughter, Elizabeth Ashcraft of Pierson; sister, Juanita Mercer of Columbia, South Carolina; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 8 from 6-8pm at the Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in DeLand. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 9 at 10am at the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in DeLand, with Reverend Art Wuertz officiating.
