Obituary of Mary-E. Harris


CINCINNATI, Ohio Mary E. Harris, age 76, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Monday, June 18, 2007. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in West Highland (Old Section) Cemetery with Van Hoose and Steele Funeral Home directing.Mary Elizabeth Harris was born March 18, 1931, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the daughter of W.C. Watson, Sr. and Hattie Mae Hawkins Watson. She grew up in Tuscaloosa and married Robert O. Harris, Sr. on January 21, 1953. Of that union there is one son, Robert Obbra Harris, Jr.After graduating from Alabama A&M College in 1949 at the age of 18, she decided to pursue a career in teaching young adults. In the early years, Mrs. Harris distinguished herself as an outstanding English and Social Studies teacher for Dry Creek High and Riverside High in Tuscaloosa County.The family church home is St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully as Young Adult Sunday School Teacher for many years.Robert, Mary and son moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1967. She continued a career in the public school system. At Withrow High School, she became the first African American English teacher in that school's history. Walnut Hills High and Walter Peoples Junior High are among the additional schools where she served. Mary Harris was a valued employee and mentor, retiring after over 49 years of teaching high school students in 1998.She is survived by her son, Robert Obbra Harris, Jr. and wife Pamela Harris of Naperville, Ill. In addition, she is survived by one brother, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Her husband, Robert O. Harris, Sr., and her parents, William C. Watson and Hattie Mae Hawkins Watson, preceded her in death.
