DAVIS, Mary August 24, 1925 - August 15, 2013Mary Lethe Davis passed away on August 15, 2013 at the Three Hills Hospital. On August 24, 1925 Mary was born the fourth child of E.J.C. and Helena Boake at her grandmother's maternity ward in Swalwell, Alberta. She was raised on Downsview Farm east of Acme where her dad raised mixed grains and purebred Shorthorn cattle and Tamworth hogs. In 1932 she started school at the Delft one room school that she attended until Grade 9. To get to school she either walked, took a buggy or cutter or rode her horse. As a girl she liked riding the horses on the farm and swimming in the Kneehill Creek. Mary was a member of the Grainger 4-H Club. In 1942 she started High School in Acme staying at friends' houses during the week. Mary took Grade 12 in Kathyrn in 1944 and returned to take a second year of Grade 12 in Swalwell, so that she could get enough credits to enter nursing school. In 1948 she graduated as a Registered Nurse working at the General Hospital in Calgary. It was while she was attending nursing school that her romance with Art Davis blossomed and they were married the year she graduated nursing school. The ceremony was at the Acme United Church and was followed by a honeymoon in Banff. Mary and Art settled down on the farm four miles west of Acme where they raised cattle, hogs, grain and six kids. Marilynn Davis of Vancouver was the first to arrive in 1951, Donna Hagel of Beiseker was second in 1952 with Jay Davis of Acme being the first boy in 1954, Tina Becker of Three Hills was next in 1956 with Darcy Davis of Acme coming along in 1960 and Roy Davis of Strathmore to round things out in 1964. Mary was always active in the community belonging to the Sewing Circle, Grace Guild and long-time member and supporter of the UCW. Her love of reading and learning led her to serve on the Library Board in Acme where she served as Chair from 1978 until 1989. Arda Farms, as Mary and Art's place came to be known, always had a large garden that she loved. Countless entries were made in local Flower shows over the years with many ribbons won. First and foremost Mary loved her family. She helped out with the raising of her younger siblings then went on to raise her own six children while being a special Aunt to her large number of nieces and nephews. Her house in Acme was always open to a parade of grandchildren for overnight stays, afternoon tea parties or after school snacks. Her laughter and generosity made large family gatherings treasured times for all of her family and friends. We will all miss her. She is predeceased by her husband Art Davis, her brothers Bartholomew and Joe Boake. She is survived by her brothers Bud, Bill, Guy, Ken, Bob and Matt Boake; her sisters Pat Jones and Leta Wise as well she is survived by her six children, sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Acme United Church, Acme Alberta at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to condolences@sunsetltd.ca. Memorial donations may be made to Acme United Church Memorial Fund, Box 293, Acme, AB T0M 0A0.
