DOVER ; Mary L. Clay, of Mount Vernon Street, died surrounded by loved ones on Friday, April 17, 2009, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.Born Aug. 31, 1914, in Salmon Falls, she was the daughter of Harold M. and Mary Elizabeth (McIntyre) Bowman. Raised in Salmon Falls, she was a 1932 graduate of Berwick Academy and attended McIntosh College. She was a clerical worker in her father's foundry in Salmon Falls before her marriage in 1936. Mary then moved to Dover for the remainder of her life, and also spent many winters in Stuart, Fla.Mary served on the Baha'i Spiritual Assembly of Dover, was a member of the Berwick Academy Alumni Association, and for many years was a volunteer for the American Red Cross bloodmobile in Dover. Mary is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Clay and her husband, Edward Camire; son, Michael E. Clay Sr. and his wife, Pati; seven grandchildren, including the light of her life, her loving and devoted granddaughter, Sarah (Plante) Hart; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild, two nieces, and five nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents; stepmother, Amelia (Scherer) Bowman; husband, Malcolm W. Clay; son, M. Leonard Clay; sisters, Audrey Wood and Hazel Rinaldi; and brother, Harold Bowman.There were no calling hours. Graveside prayers were held for the family at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover on Saturday, April 18. A celebration of Mary's life will take place this summer at Merrymeeting Lake, where Mary enjoyed every summer for the past 56 years.Mary's family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Merrymeeting Lake Association's Water Quality Fund or Watershed Conservation Fund, c/o MMLA Secretary/Treasurer, PO Box 468, New Durham, NH 03855; Educational Programs ; Palliative Care, c/o Wentworth-Douglass Hospital & Health Foundation, 789 Central Ave, Dover, NH 03820-2526; or the charity of one's choice.
