TUSCALOOSA Mary C. Martin died on February 21, 2008 on her 94th birthday at home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Services will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home on Saturday, February 23 at 2 pm with family clergy Lee Vail presiding. Burial will follow at Memory Chapel Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1 to 2 pm.She was preceded in death by her husband Letaw Martin; daughter Charlotte Martin Cohran; mother, Mary Jean Stacy; father, Richard Roach Stacy and her nine brothers and sisters.Survivors include her daughter Dorothy J. Martin; granddaughter, Christie Blank (Michael); and great grandson, Evan.Mary C. Martin was a long time resident of Vance, Alabama where she was employed as Postmistress of the United States Postal Service for many years.She was also elected to the city council where she served more than twenty years. During her tenure, she was recognized by the governor for outstanding service to her community. She was instrumental in securing the Vance location for the Mercedes Benz plant. Because of her efforts, the Vance Library was established and continues to grow.She was an active member of the Vance Baptist Church where she contributed her time and resources.Pallbearers are Michael Blank, Hugh Devereaux, Walton Gamble, Ted Leger, Michael Martin, George Phillips, and L.B. Stacy.Honorary pallbearers are her friends and neighbors of the Vance community, staff of DCH Home Health Care Systems, staff of the Office of Academic Affairs at The University of Alabama, Dr. Eugene Marsh, and special caregivers Erica Brown, Telease Davis, Shirley Washington, Annie White and Wanda Williams.Contributions may be made to the Vance Baptist Church, Vance, AL, 35490 or your favorite charity.
