Mrs. Mary C. Hughes, 99, of Midway departed this life on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at the Bryan County Health and Rehab in Richmond Hill.She was born April 16, 1913, to the late Charlie Stevens Sr. and Mary Baker Stevens in the Sunbury community. She was a member of Sunbury Missionary Baptist Church and worked as a maid until her retirement. She was a quiet and peaceful Christian who enjoyed cooking, sewing and the love of family and friends. Her husband of 45 years preceded her in death. She was the last surviving child of a group of nine. Her hands, food and love touched the lives of numerous nieces and nephews for more than six generations.Her survivors include three foster daughters, Rose Mullice, Mercedes Byrd, both of Midway, and Irene (Randolph) Ward of Richmond Hill; a foster son, Wendell Stevens of Midway; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.Her viewing will be from 1-5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, at Dorchester Funeral Home in Midwsay.Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Sunbury Missionary Baptist Church in the Sunbury community of Midway. Her body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. Robert Brown will be the eulogist and the Rev. Moses Blackmon will preside.Dorchester Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
