Mary Wyche Burgess, 88, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at her home in Greenville, S.C.Mrs. Burgess, widow of attorney Alfred Franklin Burgess and daughter of the late Cyril Granville and Mary Wheeler Wyche, was a lifelong resident of Greenville.She is survived by her five children, Mary Wyche Lesesne, Caroline Burgess Ansbacher, Judge A. Franklin Burgess Jr., Granville Wyche Burgess and Victoria Burgess Pitman; their spouses, Dr. Arthur E. Lesesne, Benjamin R. Ansbacher, Dr. Diana Martin and Anthony R. Pitman; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Caro Wyche Wofford, Sara Wyche Higgins, Marcia Wyche McIver; her brother and sister-in-law, C. Thomas and Harriet Wyche; and her half brothers, Charles Cecil Wyche and William Spencer Wyche.Mrs. Burgess graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Randolph Macon Woman's College in 1937 and held an MA in clinical psychology from Furman University. She was a writer and an historian and had a special interest in Native Americans. A member of the South Carolina Historical Society and the Greenville Historical Society, she worked for the Greenville Piedmont and published a book, numerous articles, short stories, and poems.She was president and a member of the Thursday Club for 40 years. She also belonged to the Junior League, the Quadrille Club, Friends of the Library, the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, the Shebas Investment Club, the Poinsett Club, and the Greenville Country Club. She played second violin with the Greenville Symphony for 26 years and wrote its history. For many years she was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Her hobbies and interests included reading, nature, tennis, hiking, canoeing, and music, her passion. She was a board member of the Girl Scouts, Community Chest, Greenville Woman's Club, Civic Ballet, Greenville Symphony Association, Guild of the Greenville Symphony, Red Cross, P.T.A. Council, and at one time served on the Vestry of Christ Church.The family would like to express deep gratitude to their mother's caregivers, Sarah Farley, Dorothy Butler, and Freddie Burts.Funeral services will be held at Christ Church Episcopal, Greenville, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004. Interment will follow in the churchyard.The family is at the residence.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greenville Symphony Association, 200 S.
