Obituary of Mary-Bethia Carter

1962 - 2012Mary Bethia Carter, aged 50 died suddenly July 31, in Zurich Switzerland as beloved friends held her hands and wished her peace and a safe journey to her well deserved rest. For the past 11 years Mary was Secretary General at the Claims Resolution Tribunal in Zurich, Switzerland. She was responsible for the assessment of thousands of claims relating to assets deposited in Swiss banks by Victims or Targets of Nazi persecution prior to and during the Second World War. Such was her commitment to this labor that she rarely took time away from work; she was painfully aware that claimants were dying everyday as the years dragged by and she believed that justice delayed was indeed justice denied.Mary battled tirelessly throughout her life to seek justice for people who were unable to fight for themselves. Additionally, she was a great advocate for animals, rescuing many from the streets of Brooklyn when she lived there. Tragically, the forgotten and the marginalized have lost a committed advocate. Mary was a true friend, a woman possessed of remarkable intelligence, ironic wit and a broad-ranging intellectual curiosity. Although she was preceded in death by her biological family, Mary had a rich chosen family comprised of dear friends all over the world.
