Mary Augusta Crow Anderson, Ph.D. WEST COLUMBIA - Mary Augusta Crow Anderson, Ph.D., a native of South Carolina, died early Thursday morning, February 12, 2015, of natural causes. Dr. Anderson was the widow of the late James Robert Dickie Anderson and was predeceased by her son, James Orin Anderson and daughter, Barbara Innis Anderson Ryan. She is survived by her son, Richard Cothonneau Anderson, daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Nichols Anderson; daughter-in-law, Dale Anderson (Mrs. James Orin Anderson); grandson, John Richard Nichols Anderson; granddaughter-in-law, Mary Shannon Varn Anderson; and a grandson, Byron James O'M. Ryan (Innis Anderson Ryan). Dr. Mary Anderson was educated in the Columbia city schools, attended Winthrop College from 1938-1939, graduated magna cum laude in 1942 with a B. A., from the University of South Carolina, from which she also received a M. Ed. in 1952 and a Ph.D. in English in 1966. She did post-doctoral study in England at Exeter College, Oxford University, in 1971. Dr. Anderson's teaching has spanned many years, subjects, and levels. Her career began in 1942 at Bamberg High School, where, at the age of nineteen, she taught English and French. She taught at Dentsville High School, 1950-51, and Eau Claire High School, 1951-56, before becoming Headmistress of Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, 1956-60. From 1960 to 1971, she taught at Dreher High School, where, in 1963, she began the first Advanced Placement English class in the region. At Dreher, she also directed several student drama and musical productions, and was chairman of the English Department, 1967-69. She became an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina in 1971, an associate professor in 1975, and professor emerita in 1987. Advanced writing, drama, modern British novels, science fiction, film, and children's literature were some of the English courses that she taught at Carolina. She served two terms on the University Faculty Senate and was for a number of years chairman of the University Counseling Services Committee. Joining Delta Kappa Gamma in 1965, Dr. Anderson served as Second Vice President and then First Vice President of Alpha chapter of South Carolina in the early 1970's. As a charter member of Alpha Eta chapter of South Carolina, she has worked on many committees, has been the chapter's Parliamentarian, and has served as First Vice President, 1976-78, and President, 1978-80. Among the many academic and literary organizations of which she was a member, Dr. Anderson has served as chairman of the South Carolina Academy of Authors Board of Governors, president of the University of South Carolina chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, president of the South Carolina Council of Teachers of English, vice president of the South Caroliniana Society, and member of the Board of Directors of the Thomas Cooper Society. She has also served on the Creative Writing Committee of the South Carolina Tricentennial Commission. Mary Anderson was the author of The Huguenot in the South Carolina Novel (1966), Drama in the English Department (1984), and Two Scholarly Friends: Yates Snowden-John Bennett Correspondence, 1902-1932 (1993). Often asked to speak on literary subjects, she most recently gave a lecture on South Carolina novels at the Charleston Museum, October 11, 1997. The speech was one of the Huguenot Lecture Series, sponsored by the College of Charleston History Department and Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic Connections. Services for Dr. Anderson will be held at one o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, February 16, 2015, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. A reception will follow.
