SPRAGUE, Mary Ann 84, of Corning, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at her home. Born on October 13, 1924 in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of Charles and Lillian Lyon. She attended the Buffalo Seminary and William-Smith College and was a chemist for Dupont and Corning Glass Works. She married Ted Sprague in 1952. Mary Ann served the community of Corning and the surrounding areas in many ways. She was an avid supporter of the Corning Museum of Glass and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, serving as a docent in both museums. Most recently she devoted most of her attention to the Benjamin Patterson Inn and she worked tirelessly to research, catalog and document its many collections. She is a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church in Corning. Mary Ann was a local pioneer for the historic preservation of Corning. As an active supporter of the Market Street Restoration Agency, Mary Ann was instrumental in the restoration of several buildings on Market Street, along with her husband Ted. Most recently she donated the Henkel Block Building, located at 72 E. Market Street, to the Three Rivers Development Corporation, who then converted it to upper level living. Her research and knowledge about the history of Market Street was fundamental in gaining recognition by the National Register of Historic Places. She was proud of her community and relished in the documentation of its history. In addition, Mary Ann was the author of 'Camera on Corning' - a collection of photographs taken by Frank E. Hewitt documenting the life and times of Corning, New York in the early 1900's. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ted. She is survived by her son, Andy (Nicole) Sprague of Corning; her daughter, Mary Ann (Joe) Erickson of Durango, CO; her daughter, Nell (Ned) Massee of Midlothian, VA; grandchildren, Ned Massee, Jr., Peter Massee, Charlie Erickson, Andy Erickson, Martine Sprague; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place in June. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Benjamin Patterson Inn and Christ Episcopal Church.
