Mary Allen died at her home in the Bronx, on Friday, February 2, 2001 after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born in Granville County, NC, July 15, 1925 to Robert and Mary Hargrove. She was a graduate of the Mary Potter High School in Oxford, NC and Fayetteville State Teacher College (now Fayetteville University) in 1947. After moving to New York, she married the late Jesse Allen and settled in Mt. Vernon, NY. She received her Masters from Lehman College and was a devoted teacher with the Robert Fulton Elementary School which is now called Edward Williams Elementary School, until her retirement in 1990. Mary is survived by her four children, Ms. Tressie Rooks of White Plains, NY, Ronald Allen of NYC, Donald Allen of the Bronx, NY, Mrs. Jessica Barber of Victorville, CA. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two sisters, Janie Ingram and Lenore Harris, four brothers, George Hargrove, John Hargrove, Charles Hargrove, and Thomas Terry, as well as a host of many loving and devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Our treasured memories of Mary will live forever in our hearts. The family will receive friends Monday, February 5, 2001 at Bronxwood Towers Community Room, 855 E. 233rd St, Bronx, NY, from 6-8 pm. The funeral will be held at the Grace Baptist Church, 56 S. 6th Avenue, Mt. Vernon, NY at 12 noon, Tuesday, February 6, 2001. Entombment at Woodlawn Mausoleum, Bronx, NY.
