ALLEN, MARY STEWART, 97Ocala - Mary Stewart Allen, 97, of Ocala, FL passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 6, 2012. She was born in Rochester, NY on March 13, 1915. She grew up on a farm in Pittsford, NY and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1935. She was married to the late Gordon W. Allen for sixty-two years until his passing in 2002. Mary and Gordon worked in the field of social work until they started to raise a family. They lived in New York State, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland as Gordon continued his career and Mary took care of their children, John, Jean, and James. After their three children had grown, Mary returned to work as a social worker at Johns Hopkins Hospital and for the State of Maryland Human Services. In 1978, Mary and Gordon retired and moved to Ocala, FL where they became very active in the arts community. Mary was a talented artist and was an active member of the Ocala Art Group and the Central Florida Symphony Orchestra Guild, now known as the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. She was also a charter member of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Marion County and the first editor of the Fellowship's newsletter that won a state award for her work. A writer of humor and insight, Mary had numerous poems published in the Wall Street Journal and published two books of poems, Women's Wear and 79 And Holding about the daily trials and tribulations of women. Mary is survived by her daughter, Jean W. Hunter of Salem, OR; and sons John S. Allen of Waltham, MA, and James R. Allen of Ocala, FL; and three grandchildren, Jacob Allen, Josie Allen and Anna Hunter. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of Marion County, 7280 SE 135th St, Summerfield, FL., 34491 on Sunday, November 4th, 2012 at 1:30 pm.
