Mary Alice Williams, 73 PORTLAND -- Mary Alice Williams, 73, of Buxton, formerly of Portland, died peacefully with her daughters by her side on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Maine Medical Center after a tough battle with pneumonia. She was born on October 22, 1940 in Los Angeles, Calif. a daughter of Gayle W. and Alice Roger Hunt. Mary attended school in Roosevelt Elementary School in Santa Monica, Calif. and was a graduate of Santa Monica High School. In 1970 Mary married Alvin Williams, Jr. They enjoyed sailing, gardening and quiet summers in Harpswell. A hobby she also enjoyed in Harpswell was playing tennis with friends. Alvin predeceased her in 1985. She was a homemaker that did many volunteer activities in the community. She was an active member in the Portland Symphony Orchestra woman's group and volunteered in the box office there as well. Mary was an active member of the Cathedral of St. Luke over the last 40 years. The committees she participated in at the Cathedral included Vestry member, Jr. and Sr. Warden, Director of the Altar guild, Director of the Flower Guild, Choir member and Assistant to the Treasurer. In addition to all her volunteer work she also worked at the United States Census Bureau and Ingraham Volunteers. Mary was predeceased by her husband in 1985, and by her son, David Durand in 2006. She is survived by a sister, Ann Lindeen (Gordon II) of Simi Valley Calif., a brother, Robert Hunt of Lake Forest Calif. (Janice); two daughters, Hannah and Rebecca Williams; and three grandchildren, Jamie, Allie and Drew Williams, all of Buxton; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary loved to entertain and spend time with friends who will miss her greatly. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service with communion Tuesday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m. at The Cathedral Church of St. Luke, 143 State Street, Portland. Spring burial will be held at the West Harpswell Cemetery, Harpswell. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland.
