ObituaryMartha Risdal Anderson passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family July 23, 2007 at the age of 96. She was the wife of the late Einar Anderson (Captain Andy) who preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Anderson was one of six children born to Nikolai and Ragnille Risdal in Skudenes, Norway in 1910. At the age of 19, she immigrated to Brooklyn, New York where she later owned and operated a beauty salon until 1946, when she, her husband and daughter moved to Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Pursuing the thriving shrimping industry, the family moved to Florida and settled permanently on Fort Myers Beach in 1954. Martha remained as a full time resident of Fort Myers Beach for 52 years before she moved to Cypress Cove in 2006. Martha and her husband owned and operated the Shrimp Box in the 1960s, a popular fresh seafood restaurant by the beach pier. A devout Lutheran, Martha had been an active member of the St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Fort Myers and in 1968 became a founding/charter member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Fort Myers Beach. Many locals fondly remember when she drove the school bus for Beach Elementary and later Cypress Lake school children during the '50s and early '60s. In addition to spending time with family and friends and traveling to Norway, she enjoyed daily walks on the beach and gardening. She attributed her vibrant and long life to hard work, tenacity, strong faith, and healthy living. As such, she was an inspiration to all who knew her. Mrs. Anderson is survived by her daughter Barbara Anderson Hill; three grandchildren, Kevin (Janice) Hill, Estero; Kristina (Philip) McDonough, Greenwich, Connecticut and Sam (Jennifer) Hill, Eufaula, Alabama; six great-grandchildren, Jessica, Travis, Eric, Fletcher, Spencer and Jack; her sister Ragnhild Kallestein, Skudenes and many nephews and nieces, including Linda Risdal Knott of Bonita Springs. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service celebrating her life on Saturday, July 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 3751 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach followed by a reception in the church hall. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Harvey-Engelhardt- Metz Funeral Home and Crematory of Fort Myers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church Enduring Gifts Fund or Cypress Cove Memorial Fund, 10200 Cypress Cove Drive, Fort Myers, Florida, 33908.
