Martha-Lillian Smith, daughter of James and Lillie, died on October 29, 1917. Please consult the obituary here:
SMITH, Martha Lillian (nee Hanley) October 29, 1917 August 2, 2011 Sadly we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, granny and nana at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Martha was born in a two-story log farmhouse, the youngest of five daughters born to James and Lillie Hanley of Rochester, Alberta. Her journey through life was not always smooth, but it gave her a strong spirit of independence. Martha was devoted to her family, and made loyal friends wherever she went, whether in Edmonton, Camrose, Ft. St. John, Kelowna, or Victoria, and she held those friendships dear to her heart. Her bridge group, most of whom she outlived, brought her much joy and companionship. Martha is survived by two daughters, Vivian Tod (Ralph) of Vernon, BC, and Lillian Davidson (John) of Victoria. She also leaves five grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. The family wishes to express its thanks to the staff at the Legion Manor in Saanichton for the care given Martha while living there, and to Dr Marsh and the compassionate, caring nursing staff at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Thank you also to Dr. Eric Shafonsky, Martha's doctor for many years. A memorial service to honour Martha's long life will be held at Brentwood Bay United Church, 7162 West Saanich Rd. on Wednesday, August 17, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation or to Brentwood Bay United Church, would be greatly appreciated. 634034
