Marjorie Lee Carter BRATTLEBORO VT Marjorie Lee Carter, 82, passed away Sept. 22, 2009, at Langdon Place in Keene, N.H.Born Marjorie Lee Lawyer, she was raised in Oklahoma City, Okla. and then Hope, Ark. After graduating from Monticello Junior College, she worked as an assistant buyer at Neiman-Marcus and then worked for American Airlines. She met her future husband in Dallas, Texas. They were married in 1953 and their daughter, Pamela, was born in 1955. Her husband subsequently joined the U.S. Information Agency, a move which took them to Pakistan and India, an eight-year stint in Washington, a four-year assignment to Japan, and another Washington assignment. The Carters moved to Vermont in 1982, and Marge was finally able to unpack, "hunker down" and continue to manifest her life-long love of animals. She was often described as a "zooist", someone who puts animals at the top of their list. When she was nine years old, she went to see the movie Lassie and was asked to leave the theater because she was crying uncontrollably. That set a pattern for the rest of her life. She did volunteer work for the Windham County Humane Society, adopting cats and dogs along the way, while studiously avoiding any film involving animals. Inevitably, even if the film was an upbeat one, Marge would cry. Marge was known for her sense of humor, her remarkable mother-daughter relationship with Pamela, her social graces, and her endless love of chocolate. In addition to husband, Alan, and daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Phil Slagle of Brookine, N.H., she leaves two nieces, Susan Guess and Nancy Stewart, and a nephew, Tom Lawyer, all of whom reside in Texas. Her three sisters and two brothers pre-deceased her. MEMORIAL NOTICE: In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marge's name may be sent to the Windham Country Humane Society. Marge's memorial will be in the minds and hearts of those who knew and loved her. Arrangements are under the care of the KER WESTERLUND FUNERAL HOME of Brattleboro and www.kerwesterlund.com
