Obituary of Marjorie Johnson


LAKELAND -- Mrs. Marjorie Irene Johnson, whose get-it-done attitude helped make St. Anthony Catholic Church a reality, died of congestive heart failure Saturday (Sept. 6, 2003) at her home. She was 81.Mrs. Johnson was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Berlin, Wis. After attending business college she joined the U.S. Navy and served for the remainder of World War II, said her son Andrew J. Johnson of Lakeland.After the war, Mrs. Johnson went on to serve as secretary to the ambassador to Yugoslovia for 19 years, her son said.Moving to Lakeland from Fort Meade, Md., she settled in Gibsonia 30 years ago.In the mid-1980s, Mrs. Johnson played a big part in the move to organize the community and found St. Anthony Catholic Church in North Lakeland. At the time, St. Joseph in downtown was the closest Catholic church for northside residents.Holding many volunteerbased positions at the church, Mrs. Johnson worked as the director of religious education for seven years and as the bereavement facilitator, remembers her daughter, Jennifer J. Johnson of Tucson, Ariz.Expansion of outreach programs in the community was part of Mrs. Johnson's "pioneering attitude" her family said.From church to home, Mrs. Johnson was in charge, said her daughter."If anything was going on she was organizing it," she said.In addition to her son, Andrew, and daughter, Jennifer, Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, Allen Richard Johnson Sr.; sons, Allen R. Johnson Jr., Columbia, Md., and Benjamin D. Johnson, Lakeland; brother, Norbert Kysely, Santa Barbara, Calif.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Lakeland Funeral Home.
