Marjorie Inez Smith, 68, Springfield, Mo., formerly of Rockford, Ill., died July 12, 2007, in her home. She was born Oct. 12, 1938, in Portia, Ark. Mrs. Smith worked as a packaging operator for Quaker Oats Co. in Rockford, Ill. She retired after 15 years of service in May 1987. On Aug. 31, 1972, she married Larry M. Smith in Rockford, Ill. She was active with the Knit Pickers of the Ozarks, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and genealogy. She was preceded in death by mother Bonnie Austin, Sikeston; father George Bates, Kennett; sister Mona Lou Collins, Minneapolis, Minn.; and brother George Bates Jr., Rockford, Ill. Survivors include husband Larry M. Smith; two sons, John R. Cook and wife Terri, Foxfire Village, N.C., and Gerald W. Cook, Elsberry, Mo.; and one daughter, Stacy Strawn and husband Lance, Springfield; stepchildren Jodie Campbell, Glendale, Ariz., Janet Strandgard and husband Joel of Glendale, Ariz., and Jill Smith, Aurora, Ariz.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Arbie Bates, Black Rock, Ark., and Frank Bates and wife DeDe, Cherokee Village, Ark.; sister Mary E. Boyd and husband Walter, St. Peters, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and close friends. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2007, in Greenlawn Funeral Home South, with burial following in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
