GILMAN, Marjorie Irene Surrounded by the people she loved, Marjorie Irene Gilman (nee Ramsey) passed away December 18, 2008 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. "Marge" as family and friends affectionately called her had an insatiable zest for life. She lived her life with passion, dedication and determination. Marge was as beautiful as she was stylish, intelligent, and creative. She lit up a room the moment she walked in. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved to welcome people into her home especially during her favourite Christmas season and was known for her hospitality. Marge was born December 31, 1919 at the Grange Hotel during a labour riot at Portage and Main. She was born to an Irish immigrant (Tom Ramsey) and a dedicated Salvationist (Hilda Ramsey). She grew up on Elgin Avenue where her parents ran a boarding house. In later years, her father grew mushrooms in the back yard to sell to local restaurants for additional income. She grew up "street smart" and always had the support of her sister and brothers. Her younger years greatly influenced her determination to work hard and succeed in life. She was a true " Irish" prairie girl. She was proud of her Irish roots and was loyal to the city she grew up in. She raised her three children and ran the family wholesale business - Jewellery Distributors. Marge and her husband Sam built the business from the ground up, employing many people who became lifelong friends. Marge was a woman ahead of her time. During an era when most women stayed at home, Marge had a career working tirelessly beside her husband. Marge was a Winnipegger at heart. She loved to show off her city when people came to visit and enjoyed the diverse cultural experiences. She especially loved Folklorama, dancing at the Hollow Mug and dining at Rae and Jerry's. Marge was also a creature of habit. During her working years, she and her husband Sam could be seen walking arm in arm for their daily lunch at Eaton's. Marge had an artistic flair. From sewing to crafts to decorating - she loved to create. Over the years she made hats, children's clothes and could make anything she set her mind to. A lover of animals, especially dogs, Marge had many family pets including dog breeds from poodles to dalmatians. Marge was predeceased by her father Tom, her mother Hilda and her sister Edna. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Samuel Gilman, daughters Dawn Allard (Cam) and Marlene Loewen (John Wallace) and son Donald Gilman (Catherine), grandchildren Beth Allard- Clough, Nicole Prokop, Paul Allard, Michelle Bessette, Rebecca Gervais, Sarah Gilman and Fiona, Sara and Liam Beaton and her brothers Pat and Harold Ramsey and Kim Gilman. She also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren as well as an extended family of nieces and nephews. Marge touched the lives of so many. Her cheerful smile, optimism, practical advice and spunk and spirit will be greatly missed. She has promised us she will be our guardian angel from above. The family would like to thank the 4th floor south staff at Salvation Army Grace Hospital for their care and compassion as well as the staff at Deer Lodge Centre who helped her during her stroke recovery. A celebration of Marge's life will be held at a later date. Details to be announced. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to one of the following; Deer Lodge Centre, The Salvation Army or The Humane Society.
