AUGUSTA, Ga. - Marjorie Frances Butler Carter, the widow of the late Dr. James E. Carter, Jr., was born July 23, 1906, in Columbia, S.C., the fourth child of Frank K. Butler and Susie Jumper. She passed away on Monday, January 2, 2006. She completed her early education at the Howard Elementary School and Benedict College High School. She enrolled in the College of Pharmacy at Howard University and graduated with a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry with high honors in 1928. While at Howard, she received a gold medal for the highest rating for research in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. She was a member of the Howard University Choir and had the honor of singing at the inauguration of President Calvin Coolege. She also sang solos at the Metropolitan A.M.E Church and the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church of Washington, D.C. She was also active in several campus organizations including student government and the Y. W.C.A. She later received a Bachelor of ArtsDegree from Paine College and the Master of Science in Education from the University of Michigan. She was christened at an early age at the Ladsen Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C. After her marriage in 1928 and relocation to Augusta in 1930, she moved her membership to Christ Presbyterian Church where she has been a faithful member in excess of 75 years. She served the church in many capacities and was ordained a Ruling Elder in 1960. She was a charter member of the Ellis-Harris Society of Presbyterian Women. She was initiated into the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in 1925, following in the footsteps of her two older sisters, Ruth and Edith, who were inducted in 1920 and 1921, respectively. She was a charter member of the Zeta Xi Omega Chapter in Augusta. She was also a charter member of the Women's Civic Club, the Links, Inc., the We Moderns Bridge Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Georgia Dental Society. She was also a life member of the American Association of University Women and the Paine College Alumni Association. She held memberships in Phi Chi Sigma Pharmaceutical Fraternity and Pi Lamda Theta Honor Society. She served as president of the Georgia Dental Auxiliary and National President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the National Dental Association. She was named Teacher of the Year for Richmond County Georgia in 1958 and has received numerous awards and honors over the years since her retirement from active teaching duties in 1971. Before her teaching career began in 1930 at the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute, under the tutelage of the great Lucy Craft Laney, she practiced pharmacy in Roanoke, Va. and Aiken, S.C. Because of limited opportunities for black female pharmacists, she entered the teaching profession as an instructor of Chemistry, General Science, Latin and French. Her teaching career lasted 38 years, with 22 of those years at the Lucy C. Laney High School. She is survived by one son, James E. Carter III; daughter-in- law, Judy L. Carter; two grandsons, James E. Carter IV, and Free Mason Johnson III; granddaughter- in-law, Connie E. Carter; greatgrandsons, Ryan Addison Carter and Austin Grant Carter; one niece, Patricia R. Holloway; and two goddaughters, Wilhelmina R. Brodie and Effie Josey Forde. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, January 5, 2006, at 1 p.m., at Gilbert-Lambuth Chapel, Paine College, Augusta, with Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Irvin, pastor of Old Storm Branch Baptist Church officiating. Funeral processional will leave the residence at 12:25 p.m. Burial will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
