Marjorie E. Smith, 94 SOUTH PORTLAND -- Marjorie E. Smith, 94, went home to heaven on Sept. 27, 2014. She was born on May 15, 1920, at Young's Cove, New Brunswick, Canada, the daughter of Glenn A. and Hazel Slocum Smith. In 1925 the family moved to Bangor, where she graduated from Bangor High School. She also received degrees from Wheaton College, Illinois, Boston University, and the University of Maine. Marjorie was an X-ray and lab technician at Sage Memorial Hospital in Ganado, Ariz. She then worked 24 years with the Massachusetts Audubon Society in the Education Department, as a natural science teacher for grade five, supervising teacher and assistant to the director. Marjorie worked at Portland Litho as circulation manager for National Antiques Review and also for N. H. Profiles magazine until they were sold. Later she worked in the office for Radiology Associates and Lee Dodge. Marjorie was a member of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, the Josselyn Botanical Society and was JBS treasurer for 11 years. A gifted artist, she enjoyed knitting and other craft projects. Over the years, Marjorie touched the hearts of many with her frequent letters and cards of encouragement. She attended the Second Parish Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Portland for many years. Marjorie was blessed to spend the last several months of her life at the Cedars. Marjorie was pre-deceased by her sister, Jessie Marshall, in 2007 and her brother, David Smith, in 2009. She is survived by several family members who will miss her deeply. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. Private burial will be at Highland Cemetery, Carmel.
