LOWELL -- Marie M. (Fertitta) Hurley, 70, a lifelong Lowell resident who was active in local politics and a community volunteer, died Friday morning, June 29, following a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of James L "Jazz" Hurley, who died Aug. 14, 2005.She was born in Lowell on Sept. 24, 1936, a daughter of the late Roger and Elizabeth (Vincent) Fertitta. She graduated from St. Peter's Grammar School and Lowell High School.Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Hurley had worked at Zeneca Resins Co. in Wilmington. In her earlier years, she had been employed at Teredyne Corp. in Nashua, and New England Telephone of Lowell.Mrs. Hurley was active in politics, and once ran for state representative. She belonged to the Democratic Women's Club, and the League of Women Voters. Mrs. Hurley also volunteered as a Brownie leader and an assistant Girl Scout leader, and served as secretary at the Reilly School in Lowell.She attended both the Lowell Senior Center and the Centralville seniors organization. She was a member of the East End Auxillary Cribbage League. She enjoyed traveling, playing cribbage, making crafts, and above all, time spent with her grandchildren.She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Paula M. and Richard R. Pruyne of Tewksbury, Brenda J. and Patrick A. Douglas of Lowell, and Karen L. Hurley of Lowell; four grandchildren, Patrick J. Douglas of Lowell, Brendon Ranagan-Hurley of Lowell, Robert J. Pruyne and Rachel E. Pruyne, both of Tewksbury; a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony J. and Mary (Morris) Fertitta of Tewksbury.She also leaves a brother-in-law, Robert P. Hurley of Lowell; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Hurley of York, Maine; as well as many nieces and nephews.
