Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret T. Martin, 98, of Anniston, will be at 3 p.m. today, September 22, 2010, at 1st United Methodist Church with the Rev. Minnie Stovall and the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the Church. Mrs. Martin passed away Monday, September 20, 2010, in Anniston. Survivors include her sister, Anna M. Turri, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; daughters, Beverly Sullivan, of Huntsville and Janice Martin (Gerald Harrison), of Anniston; grandchildren, R. Alan Martin (Melanie), of Anniston, M. Clinton McCluskey (Beverlye), of Anniston, C. Wesley Vardaman (Kelly), of Huntsville, Leanne V. Meyers (Tim), of Chicago; great-grandchildren, Hayden and Aly Martin, Alex Ellison, Shane Ragsdale, Michael McCluskey, Kassidy and Kameron Peterson, Parker Wesley Vardaman, Peyton and Margaret Anne Meyers; a special caregiver, Shelia Zydowicz, and nephews, Charles and James Martin, of Annapolis, Maryland. Mrs. Martin is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Charles H. Martin. Pallbearers will be Gerald Harrison, Alan Martin, Clinton McCluskey, Thomas Allman, Wesley Vardaman, and Timothy Meyers. Honorary pallbearers will be Neysa Coker Sunday School Class. Mrs. Martin was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Anniston, as a teacher and President of the Neysa Coker class, United Methodist Women's Association. She served her community through many organizations, including: Cottaquilla Council of Girl Scouts, as a leader for Brownies and Scouts; President of Tenth Street School PTA, raising funds to erect fencing to protect children; an active member and President of the Women's Civic Club, helping preserve the historical Anniston Inn; and she helped organize and sustain a non-denominational senior group, Positive Christian Singles. Many will remember her through activities with the Athena Study Club as charter member and President. She was active with the Anniston Country Club Ladies Golf Association and continued playing golf until age 92. Mrs. Martin supported the Auburn University Football Program through the Calhoun County Auburn Alumni and attended games well into her nineties. Friends admired her spirit, determination, and timely jokes. She was always an inspiration and example to her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to 1st United Methodist Church of Anniston.
