Moore, Margaret Mary "Peggy"Jan. 3, 1920 - May 9, 2013Margaret Mary Moore - Peggy to her family and friends - was born on January 3, 1920- to Bernard and Nora (nee O'Brien) Moore, in Berlin, Connecticut. The middle child of three, she had an older brother, John and a younger brother, Bill, both of whom predeceased her.After losing their mother at a very young age, Peggy and her brothers spent a number of years in school, in Watertown, New York, before returning to Kensington to attend high school when their father remarried. Peggy graduated from Berlin High School and then from Central Connecticut Teachers' College, where she had studied for a career as an elementary teacher. She took a job in the Warehouse Point, Connecticut, school system, teaching 2nd grade for several years. In 1955, a recruiter from the Department of Defense schools came to Warehouse Point and convinced Peggy to join up. She boarded an ocean liner for France, beginning what was to become a life filled with travel and excitement. Her long career as a 2nd grade teacher in the DOD system included postings to Paris, France; Munich, Germany where she lived for 15 years: Madrid, Spain; Woodbridge, England and Cuba. She retired in 1992 from her last posting, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and moved to Sarasota, Florida. A lifelong devout Catholic, Peggy joined St. Thomas More, shortly after she settled in Sarasota. She attended regularly and traveled to different places with church groups. In retirement, she volunteered at the Sarasota Food Bank for several years.Peggy lived, for the past three years, at the Heron Club at Prestancia. In April of this year, after two major falls she was brought to Norwichtown Rehabilitation Center, where her niece, Patricia Marshall is a social worker. She passed away May 9th. It was her wish to have her ashes interred in the memorial garden at St. Thomas More, her church home. Peggy leaves three nieces and their families, Rosemary Stipa of Telford, PA, Patricia Marshall of Canterbury, CT and Janet Pfeiffer of Fairfax, VA. Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2506 Gulf Gate Dr., Sarasota, FL 34231 Monday July 15th. at 9:30 am.
