Margaret Walton Lucas, a long-time resident of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010.She was born on Jan. 14, 1918, in Birmingham, Ala., to Samuel and Ophelia Almon Walton. She was a resident of the local area since 1951 when she moved here with her two children and husband Horace Lucas who was an electronic engineer at Eglin Air Force Base. She was a loving mother and homemaker, and always found time to volunteer at schools and at the local hospital. She was Baptist by faith and an active member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach. She was a teacher of first grade Sunday school for over 50 years, where she was known to the children through the years as "Miss Margaret." Prior to her passing she lived in an apartment in the Westwood Retirement Resort.She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Horace of 69 years of marriage; three brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include son, Don Lucas and wife Regina of Canton, Ga.; daughter, Dianne Lucas Simms and her husband Stewart of Athens, Ga.; grandchildren, Bryant Lucas (wife Marilyn), Marci Lucas, Jonathan Simms, Catherine Simms Register and David Simms (wife Katie); and two great-grandchildren, Nathan Lucas and Logan Elizabeth Register.The family will receive friends at a visitation on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the church with Dr. Howard Gates and son-in-law, Dr. Stewart Simms, officiating. Following the service, burial will be in Beal Memorial Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Fort Walton Beach, c/o the Monroe Children's Chapel Fund, 21 S.E. First St., Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548, in memory of Margaret Lucas and her love for children.Memories and condolences can be left at www.McLaughlinMortuary.com.
