Margaret Louise Smith      SACO -- Margaret Louise Smith passed away on the 29th day of June, 2007, at her home in Saco. She was born on Feb. 4, 1918, the daughter of Edward A. and Louise M. Huff in Lynn, Mass., where her father was an electrician with General Electric. When the depression hit, though her father almost always found work, albeit hard won, the family experienced the typical life of moving from city to city, often returning to the Huff farm in Lyman. After graduation from Pawtucket Senior High School, she attended Pembroke College, a division of Brown University in Rhode Island. Due to the hard times, she transferred to and later graduated from the University of Maine in Old Town. During her college years she worked various jobs, including returning to the family farm, her job being to check the eggs for sale in the general market. After graduation from college, she worked for the Farm Security Administration, teaching farm families nutrition and budgeting. She loved the job because it gave her an opportunity to help people in need and to travel around rural Maine by car. On Sept. 7, 1940, she married Charles W. Smith of Lyman and helped found the law firm of Smith Elliott Smith & Garmey, with offices in Saco and Portland.     She raised four children, instilling in them a love of nature and the arts. She gave her children a strong sense of moral responsibility, as well as a strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity and compassion. Margaret had a lifelong passion for reading and education; later in life, she volunteered at the Dyer Library in Saco, took up writing poetry and non-fiction pieces, and finally fulfilled her desire to travel, going on tours in the United States and Europe.     Margaret was an accomplished pianist, belonging to the Shubert Club when she resided in Kennebunk. She also had endless practical skills in running a household; she was an excellent seamstress and of course her children cannot forget that she conjured up homemade desserts 364 days a year (365th was Jello when it was too hot to bake). She was also a parishioner at the Alfred Congregational Church in Alfred. In the last two years of her life she greatly missed going to lunch after church services with a close group of friends.     She is predeceased by her parents; her husband, Charles W. Smith; her sister, Thelma Berry; a sister, Ruth Huff; and a brother, Donald Huff. She is survived by a brother, Edward Huff and his wife Ellen of Orono, and their children. She is also survived by her four children: Nancy Wood and her husband Clifton Wood of Kitty Hawk, N.C. and Shapleigh; Rhonda Zevin and her husband Robert Zevin of Cambridge, Mass.; Deborah Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Charles W. Smith Jr. and his wife Susan Smith of Biddeford. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marshalyne Pullen and her husband Ray of Lyman; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.      The family thanks all of the caregivers that took care of her as one of their own during her illness.     There will be a private service at a later date.
