Margaret "Peggy" Flaherty Johnson, 88, formerly of Fairmount Avenue and most recently of Roosevelt Apartments, passed away Tuesday morning, February 24, 2009 at Mount Loretto Nursing Home in Amsterdam. Born in Amsterdam, New York on October 21, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Joseph E. and Louise Christman Flaherty. Peggy attended St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam and graduated, class of 1938 and then from Amsterdam School of Commerce in 1939. She was employed as a clerk at Mohasco Corporation, retiring in 1980. Peggy was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of its Rosary Society. She was a charter member of the St. Mary's Institute Social Club and was a member of St. Mary's Seniors. Her husband, Emmett B. Johnson to whom she was married on June 27, 1942, passed away on April 1, 2003. Peggy is survived by one son, Alan J. Johnson Sr. and his wife, Renee A. of Amsterdam, New York; one daughter, Melanie A. Westfall of Amsterdam, New York; four grandchildren, Christopher T. Westfall and his wife, Christina of Portsmouth New Hampshire, Alan J. (A.J.) Johnson and his wife, Megan of Queensbury, New York, Michael E. Westfall and his wife, Ginger of Davie, Florida and Brian T. Johnson and his wife, Carrie of Ballston Spa, New York; 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Her grandson, Jeffrey M. Johnson; her son-in-law, Thomas G. Westfall; two brothers and two sisters also predeceased Peggy. Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 10:30 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, New York followed at 11 o'clock by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, New York. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, New York. Calling hours are Friday morning from 9 to 10:30 at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Peggy's name may be made to the Jeff Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Sheila Scheckton, 35 Wall Street or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny Corners Road - both Amsterdam, New York 12010.
