After her mother's early death, she was raised by her beloved sister, Frances Woodruff Roberts. She lived her entire life in Tuscaloosa except for one brief stint during World War II. She married Aaron D. (Tennessee) Harris in 1944. Margie and Tennessee were founding members of the University Presbyterian Church. Margie was the last surviving founding member. The church was central to her life and she dedicated many hours to raising money for the Winter-Vallery Student Center and helping develop the church's loving, inclusive atmosphere. She was most proud of making the desserts for student dinners at the church and made many friends among the students. The renovated kitchen at UPC was named the Margie Harris Kitchen at the request of the students.Margie will always be remembered for her infectious smile and boundless optimism. She was the epitome of "southern hospitality" with an ever open door and desire to help anyone who needed it. A friend recently wrote, "They say that home is the place where you know they'll always take you in. After my folks died I always felt your mama's house was the place I could go if I didn't have a place to go. I can't think of anybody who was kinder to me." The family couldn't say it better.Margie and Tennessee were consummate Tide fans. They followed all Tide athletics from the All-American Quarterback to the reserve at the end of the bench who contributed in his or her own way. Later in life, Margie was always decked out in Crimson on game day, regardless of the season and liked to leave "Roll Tide" messages on the voicemail of family and friends after big wins and even crushing defeats. Special thanks to Dr. Regina Harrell, Alacare Hospice, residents and staff at Pine Valley Retirement Community, residents and staff of the Knoll, members and students past and present of University Presbyterian Church, and the too numerous to count friends from Tuscaloosa and all over. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Robert Keever, Tennessee Harris, Margie Harris Scholarship Fund at the University Presbyterian Church, 1127 8th Street, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, or Alacare Hospice, 5710 Watermelon Road, Northport, AL 35476.
