Cox, Margaret Elaine "Elaine"July 19, 1935 - Aug. 29, 2012Margaret Elaine Cox "Elaine" - former Manatee High school teacher passed away peacefully on August 29, 2012. Elaine was born July 19, 1935 in Dallas Texas and was the youngest daughter of Jack and Margaret (Phinney) Dillon. Elaine was proud to be a 5th generation Texan as well as a member of the Mayflower Society. Elaine graduated in 1956 from Southern Methodist University and married classmate, Floyd DeVine Cox. They moved to Floyd's hometown of Bradenton where she began her 35 year plus career as a teacher. Teaching was a natural profession for Elaine. She was cheery, energetic, enjoyed people and liked to talk. Elaine's first teaching job was at Anna Maria Elementary School, then at Walker Junior High and finally her last 20 plus years, at Manatee High School. She was beloved by her students and well known for her animated teaching style. She loved art and invariably intertwined her history lessons with pictures and slides from her many art museum visits around the world. After Floyd's death in 1978, Elaine filled her time with friends, travel and "field trips" with her treasured grandchildren. She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, a Steven's Minister, Cursillo member and past president of St Anne's. Elaine was a past officer of the Manatee County Republican Women's Club, past officer of the Manatee County Historical Society, a sustaining member of the Junior League and a member of numerous art museums. In 2008, Elaine married Robert "Bob" Leonard. Surviving Elaine are her two children Susan Cox Scheffer and husband Mark Scheffer MD of Concord, NH, Scott Cox and wife Elizabeth of Schertz,Tx, husband Bob and step-children John Leonard and wife Debbie( Palmetto), Bob Leonard and wife Mary(Palmetto), Laurie Kline(Anna Maria) Ron Leonard( Bisbee, Az); three grandchildren William Matheson Scheffer (Ann Arbor, MI), Benjamin Cox Scheffer (Breckenridge, CO) and Victoria Margaret Scheffer (Concord, NH).The family would like to thank the staff of Westminster Towers for the wonderful care she received as her memory slipped away. The Memorial service will be September 15 at 2:00 pm at Westminster Towers in Bradenton.
