ANGELICA/SENECA FALLS/PENN YAN - Margaret E. Johnson, 97, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital. She had been residing at Clinton Crest Manor in Penn Yan.In keeping with Margaret's wishes, there will be no public calling hours. A graveside service will be held at the Arkport Cemetery in the spring at a time and date to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to the Manor Crest Foundation, 411 Clinton Street, Penn Yan 14527 to enhance the quality of life for Clinton Crest Manor residents.Margaret was born Oct. 24, 1912, in Angelica, Allegany County. The daughter of the late Joseph and Matilda Rice Shafer, she was one of eleven children. She graduated from Angelica High School and attended Alfred University. She was a partner with her husband in the former Arkport Lumber Company. She also worked at a bank and helped care for elderly people. She enjoyed painting and was an accomplished artist. She was a devoted mother to her family.Margaret is survived by her daughters, Darcie Johnson of Penfield, Mary Johnson of Rochester; her sons, Lyndon (Darlene) of Seneca Falls, Howard of Avoca and Theodore Carlton Jr. of Guatemala; grandchildren, Michael and Sean Johnson, Jennifer Marsh and Iliana Carlton and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore Carlton (a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force), who was killed in World War II, her second husband, Fred Johnson in 1966, her son Mark in 2004 and all of her siblings.
