Margaret-D. Harris, born in 1908, spouse of John Harris, mother of Peggy, Bob, Conn, Charlotte and Mary, died on February 25, 2011 at 103 years old. Please consult the obituary here:
Margaret D. Harris, called Peg, 103, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, surrounded by her family. Always a bright, well informed woman, her mind was sharp to the end, but her body was tired. Peg was born in Boston, the fourth of eight children. She was graduated from Boston Teachers College and taught science and geography at Boston Public Schools. In 1932, she married John Harris, a newspaper reporter and columnist who became political editor, Washington correspondent, then Sunday and associate editor of the Boston Globe. In 1938, they moved to Lexington where they raised their family and Peg immersed herself in volunteer work with the First Parish Unitarian Church. When, in 1978, they moved to Falmouth, Peg made the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth the center of her life outside her home. As a young woman she loved dancing and gardening, and throughout her life, was an avid reader, bridge, cribbage and solitaire player, and passionate about philosophy, politics and history | and Jane Austen. Nothing pleased her more than a good conversation. About her life, Peg often said, I fell in love with John Harris and Ive lead a charmed life. Peg is survived by her daughters, Peggy Stanwood and her husband, Bob Stanwood, of Bloomfield, Conn., Charlotte and Mary Harris of Falmouth; and four grandchildren, John Dragat of Newton, Dr. Elisabeth Hathaway of Petaluma, Calif., Charles Stanwood of Durham, Conn., and Dr. Nancy Stanwood of Rochester, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Tena Owens of Yarmouth; and many nieces and nephews. Pegs ashes will be buried with her husband in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. A memorial service will be held later in the spring. No flowers, please. Donations in her memory may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth, 840 Sandwich Road, East Falmouth, MA 02536. Arrangements are by Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Falmouth. For on-line guest book, please visit www.ccgfuneralhome. com.
