Obituary of Mary-Collins Marshall


MARSHALL, MARY COLLINS, 86, of Umatilla passed away Monday, November 21, 2005. She was born September 28, 1919 in Umatilla, the daughter of Harry and Lucy Collins. She graduated from the Florida State College for Women in 1940 where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Following graduation, she returned to Lake County to teach school and coach women's basketball in Tavares. On February 11, 1942 she married Albert Barnes Marshall, her husband of 62 years. For the next 20 years, she raised four sons in numerous U.S. Army locations including Yokohama, Japan, Lima, Peru, and Washington D.C. In 1962 Colonel Marshall retired from the US Army and they returned to Umatilla to live permanently and oversee the family's citrus business started by her father and grandfather. Until the freezes of 1984 and 1987, the citrus business was a significant part of her daily life and when asked her occupation, she always replied that she was a "farmer". Since returning to Umatilla, she was active in many philanthropic organizations and activities. Her favorite was always her many years as an active member of the Altar Guild at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Eustis. She served on the board of the Umatilla Public Library and helped form the Greater Umatilla History Center. Her background in education was also evident as she tutored many adults in reading programs. She was also active in numerous clubs including the Mt. Dora Yacht Club, P.E.O., the Umatilla Garden Club and the Umatilla Women's Club. Finally, she was a regular member of several bridge clubs for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert; oldest son, Albert Barnes Marshall, Jr. of Clearwater; two sisters, Carolyn Bassett of Monticello and Virginia Bryan of Orlando; and a brother, Robert Collins. Survivors include her brother, Harry L. Collins of Jacksonville; sons, Harry C. Marshall of Atlanta (Susan), Robert D. Marshall of Atlanta (Georgia), and Philip E. Marshall, Winter Park (Caroline); daughter-in- law Elizabeth Marshall, Clearwater; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11AM, Saturday, November 26 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Eustis, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Scholarship Fund or Hospice of Lake & Sumter. Beyers Funeral Home, Umatilla. 352-669-2146.
