Mary C. Mills 1920 -2008 BENNINGTON Mary Catherine McDonald Mills, born on St. Patrick's Day in 1920, died April 28 after a short illness in Whittier, Calif., while visiting her sister Edith VanCampen, and brother, Maurice "Chuck" McDonald of Minneapolis. She was a fascinating person in her own right, as well as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother extraordinaire. She was born in Minneapolis, Minn., and attended the University of Minnesota. She married Taylor Mills, from Boston, in 1942. The couple lived and worked in Washington, D.C., during World War II, and then settled in the suburbs of New York City to raise their family. Mary was an avid volunteer who made her mark in Larchmont, N.Y., New Hartford, Conn,, Brandon, Vt., and, for the past 10 years, through Green Mountain RSVP in Bennington. She moved with the times and had a wonderful acceptance of modern ways. Her writing ability was superb and her talent was clearly evident in every beautifully written thank-you note, Christmas letter, and non-profit press release. Always an avid reader, her awareness of world happenings, people in the news, and politics was keen, but her greatest love was her family. She was full of life and most often had a smile on her face. Her husband, Taylor, predeceased her in 1988. She leaves two daughters, Susan Armstrong and son-in-law, Kevin, of Bennington, and Elizabeth "Betsey" Jay and partner, Tom Baer, from Steamboat Springs, Colo.; her son, Mark Mills and daughter-in-law, Nancy, from Brooklyn, N.Y., and Stockbridge, Mass., six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren - with three more on the way.
