Obituary of Mary-Belle-Smith Carter


CARTER, Mary Belle Smith a resident of Montgomery, AL expired Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2008 in Montgomery, Alabama. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 1:00 p. m. at Hutchinson Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor G. W. C. Richardson, Jr. officiating. Interment will beheld at Greenwood Serenity Gardens with Ross-Clayton Funeral Home, Inc. , directing. Mary Belle was preceded in death by six beloved siblings: Geneva Watts, Willie J. Smith, Leopold Smith, John H. Smith, Stewart Smith, and Emmett Smith. She was also preceded in death by her beloved nephew, George Bibb. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted son, Billy L. Carter (Brenda) ; two grandchildren, Bryan L. Carter and Brooke A. Carter; nieces and nephews, Alberta T. Saxon, Emmett A. Smith (Linda) , Diane Y. Smith, Kenneth J. Smith, Glenda F. Smith, Alicia Stevens (Steve) , Darlene Bibb, Constance Hardy, Kenneth Bibb, Andrea Harvey, Keisha Y. Smith, and EmmettC. Smith; cousins, Emma Bracks, Martha Byrd, Mittie Jean Boyd, and Dorothy Jackson; sisters-in-law, Nathalie Christian and Arlene Lambert; brother-in-law, Dr. Henry G. Johnson (Brenda) ; and a host of great nieces and nephews. Acknowledgment is given to all special extended family members, to include Billy's sisters, Cynthia F. Carter and Tanga Carter Flowers, and Billy's nephew, Jason Flowers; Billy's father-in-law, John H. Thompson (Trinidad) , and Billy's brother-in-law, John W. Thompson (Sandra) . Special friends and neighbors are also acknowledged, to include: Helen Brooks, Minnie Lowery, DorisSanders, the late Rene Hopson, and the entire Houston Hill Community; Pastor G. W. C. Richardson, Jr. and wife, Robbye J. Richardson, Rhuhaminia Young, Mary Alice Britton, Lula Simmons, Coach Houston Markham and Annie P. Markham, Denise Gibbons, and the HMBC church family; Frederick Davis, Annette Bennett, Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson, Coach Clayton Harris, and Coach Yvette McDaniel. The family would also thank the care givers, all of whom served Mary Belle faithfully during her illness: Dr. William A. Abernathy and his staff; Mrs. Dorcas McCray, who was her care giver for more than seven years; and Mrs. Alma S. Jackson, who provided constant care and dedicated attention to Mary Belle during the final months of her illness. Special acknowledgment is also given to Ms. Estella Phelan, Ms. Tracy Dailey, Ms. Stacy Dailey, and the other members of the caring staff of Southern Care Hospice. The body will lie-in-state on Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p. m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Alabama State University Trust Fund for Academic Excellence.
