WILLIAMS, MARTHA SOISSA Age 90, of Homewood died Tuesday, December 06, 2011. Martha was born in Concepcion, Chile and moved to the United States with her family when she was 9 years old. They settled in Savannah, Georgia. She graduated from Savannah High School and married her high school sweetheart, Charlie Williams, who served in the U.S. Army in Italy during WW II. They had four children during and after the war years. In 1958, they settled in Birmingham, Alabama where they raised their children. She worked in the research department of UAB after the children were grown. Between an active career and family life, Martha had many activities she enjoyed. She was an avid tennis player and enjoyed the piano, sewing, and especially cooking. Martha and Charlie were members of Trinity Methodist Church where she sang in the Senior Choir. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 67 years, Charles A. Williams, and her oldest daughter, Linda (Michael) Swindle. She is survived by two daughters, Marsha (Jim) Leivo, and Jeannie (Benny) Winford, her son Chuck (Mihaela) Williams, her 8 grandchildren, Wesley Thomas, Andy Thomas, Jamie Taylor, Claudia Floyd, Alex Winford, Eric Leivo, Travis Leivo, and Andra Badea, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, Sara Clark, Cora Markwart, Laura Golly, and Betty Jeter, many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on December 12, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Methodist Church, with visitation to follow afterwards in the narthex.
