COOPER, MARTHA EVELYN BONNER Martha Evelyn Bonner Cooper, also known as "Mimi", passed away on January 11, 2013, at the age of 89. She was born and raised in middle Tennessee near McMinnville. The family lived for a brief time in Guntersville before moving to Gadsden. She was accepted to the University of Alabama, but her father died, and she stayed in Gadsden to take care of her mother during an extended illness. She graduated from Snead State. In Gadsden, Martha met Dr. Leo Cooper and married in 1947. She was a life time member of the Church of Christ, Antiquarian Society of Gadsden, and Red Cross. She moved to Birmingham in the mid 1980's. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grady Redding Bonner and Nancy Estelle Rogers Bonner. Martha is survived by her children; Lee (Carter) Cooper, Roger (Diane) Cooper, Nancy Cooper, Caroline Cooper, and Alethia Thomason, her caregiver of 9 years; and grandchildren, Kathryn Cooper, Nancy Cooper, & John Cooper. Words can never express the love and gratitude the family feels for Alethia. Despite the onset of Alzheimer's, Mimi's world took a turn for the best when Alethia became a part of her life. For several years they headed out almost every day for ice cream and a daily ride. Alethia brought immeasurable joy and longevity to Mimi's life. Others who played a special role in Mimi's life are Dr. Jean O'Neal at the UAB School of Dentistry, and Dr. Andrew Duxbury, and staff of the UAB Geriatrics Clinic. The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Dr. James Blanton and staff of Amedisys Hospice, especially to Linda Dodson, Janis Lucas, and Deborah Lawrence for the kind and compassionate care they provided for our mother. A family graveside service will be held at Morrison Cemetery, Morrison, Tennessee on Saturday, January 12. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Alzheimer's of Central Alabama P.O. Box 2273, B'ham, AL 35201 or the Greater Birmingham Humane Society 300 Snow Drive, B'ham, AL 35209. Mimi was always quick with a smile, to give one and return one.
